Statistical and Hematological Studies on 254 Cases of Leukemia.

Abstract
A retrospective clinical and hematological observation was carried out on 254cases of leukemia, which were collected from the Chonnam University Hospital. and Kwangju Christian Hospital during the past 10 year period from Jan. 1971 to Dec. 1980.
The results were as follows ;
1. Out of 254 cases, 242(95-3%) were acute leukemia and 12(4.7%) chronic Incidence according to cellular type of leukemia was; 55.9% in acute lymphocyte leukemia, 37.0% in acute myelocytic leukemia and 3.9% in chronic myelocytic leukemia in decreasing order of frequency. The chronic lymphocyte leukemia is, only 0.89% of total cases.
2. The age distribution of leukemia patients indicated a relatively high incidence under 30 years of age. The sex ratio of male to female was 1.7:1. Leukemia patients in rural area were 1.9 times more than those in urban area.
3. The subjective symptoms were general weakness (33.1 %) , fever (20.5%) abdominal pain (17.7%) and hemorrhage (16-9%) in order. The objective abnormalities of physical examination in order of frequency were lymph node enlargement (52.5%), hepatomegaly (46.5%) and splenomegaly (39.4%).
4. In hematological findings, most of leukemia patients revealed severe anemia, and only 3.7% of total cases showed relatively normal hemoglobin level. The platelet count was below 60,000/cmm in 52.0%. The total leukocyte count was between 10,000 to 50, 000/cmm in 40.6% and 37% of total cases showed subleukemia or a leukemia pattern.
